Building goodwill or repoire is essential to any communication.

Audience is important.
When we write, we write with a view towards WHO we are writing for. The audience is going to determine how I say what I say. If I'm talking to little kids, my approach will be very different from writing for adults.

Type of writing: personal or objective
When writing a newspaper article communicating mainly facts, it is less necessary to establish that repoire. But if you are trying to convince others of your point of view, repoire is essential.

Style and organization have a role to play in it. If I have diffuclty understanding what you are saying, then forget about goodwill. If what you write is clear and straightforward then we connect.

In essay writing it's important to start from a "common ground," some experience that your audience is more than likely to have had. That in itself helps establish goodwill.

Hope this helps!

The most effective way as a writer to build goodwil with your audience is to give them something that makes them want to continue reading. Don't just give them something they've seen twenty-five times in the past, give them something truly distinctive and vibrant. Break new ground, but don't do it in a snotty or arrogant way; do it, instead, in a way that invites them along for the journey as friends and fellow travelers.

Treat them as equals. Respect them. Don't talk down to them. Don't believe they can't get the inside joke like you can.

Don't give them cliches or pretentious writing either.

Additionally, don't give them cheap surprises, dream-sequences, or flashbacks when you don't have to and definitely don't make the entire story a dream.

Take them through the highs and lows and give them a story that says "life is like that!".

And give them characters they can empathize with.

Honor the classic contract of Author and Reader: "You promise to read what I have, and I promise to deliver."

Hit them with a dead fish.

I'm not sure what you mean. In your writing? Just tell a good story. In person? Be humble, spend time talking to them, make them laugh, don't be a prick.
