i am 34 weeks pregnant. Throughout my whole pregnancy they have always found white blood cells in my urine but it never turns out to be a infection or anything. Well yesterday, my doctor said to me i had glucose in my urine and she asked me if i had anything with sugar in it to drink. But the only thing i had was water. But she didnt say anything else about it.. What does it mean when a pregnant girl has glucose in her urine?

Gestational diabetes is a form of hyperglycemia seen in some pregnant women, usually late in their pregnancy. The cause is unknown, but it is thought that some hormones from the placenta increase insulin resistance in the mother, causing elevated blood glucose levels. Most women are screened for gestational diabetes between their 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. If gestational diabetes is found and not addressed, the baby is likely to be larger than normal, be born with low glucose levels, and be born prematurely. The hyperglycemia associated with gestational diabetes usually goes away after the baby's birth, but both the women diagnosed with gestational diabetes and their babies are at an increased risk of eventually developing type 2 diabetes. A woman who has gestational diabetes with one pregnancy will frequently experience it with subsequent pregnancies.

What is gestational diabetes?
This is a type of diabetes that some women develop during pregnancy. Between 2 and 7 percent of expectant mothers develop this condition, making it one of the most common health problems of pregnancy.

When you eat, your digestive system breaks most of your food down into a type of sugar called glucose. The glucose enters your bloodstream and then — with the help of insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas — provides fuel for the cells of your body. Like the type 1 and type 2 diabetes you can get when you're not pregnant, gestational diabetes causes the glucose to stay in your blood instead of moving into your cells and getting converted to energy. Why does this sometimes happen when you're pregnant?

During pregnancy, your hormones make it tougher for your body to use insulin, so your pancreas needs to produce more of it. For most moms-to be, this isn't a problem: As your need for insulin increases, your pancreas dutifully secretes more of it. But when a woman's pancreas can't keep up with the insulin demand and her blood glucose levels get too high, the result is gestational diabetes.

Most women with gestational diabetes don't remain diabetic once the baby is born. Once you've had it, though, you're at higher risk for getting it again during a future pregnancy and for becoming diabetic later in life.

They're probably concerned about gestational diabetes. It usually shows up around 27 weeks though... but make sure they check your urine again soon. If it were just low-levels of glucose, then they're probably not that concerned, but if they're high, you can expect them to do a fasting blood test (again, if they've already done it once.)
If it concerns you, don't hesitate to call your doctor's office and ask if you should be concerned. The nurse can tell you what your chart says and whether or not you have anything to worry about.
Best of luck!

It could be a sign of diabetes, or gestational diabetes.

100 years ago, doctors would actually taste their patients' urine to determine whether or not they had diabetes! A sweet taste (glucose) indicated the disease.

Did the doctor order any further testing?

(I'll be 34 weeks pregnant on Saturday)

You have diabetes that occurs when you are pregnant and it should go after you give birth and if not then tell your doctor.
