As an outsider, I don't know much about Latino/Hispanic culture. Therefore, if I say something that is incorrected or inaccurated or offended anyone....Please, forgive me and explain the misconception(s) that I may have.

Is there a difference between Latino & Hispanic cultures or are they the same but just different word?

If they're the same, then is Latino's culture based on the Native American Aztec Indian's culture or is it a combined/mixed culture among the Spanish colonizers and the Native American Aztec Indian?

Please, be as descriptive as possible.

Thank you all for your participations!

Many Mexicans are Native American Aztec Indians and they have their own Aztec's culture. So would they consider themselves as part of Spanish's culture?

I'm married to a Puerto Rican who's grandparents came from Spain and I've had an interest in the culture long before I met him.

The words "Latino" and "Hispanic" mean the same thing. I read somewhere recently that "Latino" is to "African American" as "Hispanic" is to "Black." but my husband just shakes his head at that. Both words describe those cultures of Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean cultures that rose out of the colonization of those areas by the Spanish.

It would not describe the Aztec Indian culture since "Hispanic" comes from the word "Spanish" and "Latino" refers to the Spanish language coming from the Latin. Natives in any of these areas had no contact with the Roman Empire.

Now, the words "Latino" and "Hispanic" describe the language and culture of a mixture of Natives, Spanish, and African peoples who were either there when the Spanish arrived or were brought there to do slave labor after most of the indigenous people were killed off by disease or living/working conditions.

As I'm sure you know, none of the Latino or Hispanic groups are a race as some of the people who answered your question still think, they are ethnic groups.

Well those are denominations given by the government Latino is a person with Latin American decent living in US, Latin America being central and south American countries which language come from Latin like Portuguese, French & Spanish. Hispanics is a person with Spanish speaking language country decent. Which excludes for example Brazil but includes Caribbean islands like Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The government tend to identify as Hispanics those mention above and Mexicans most often but Hispainics are not tied to America only people from Spain for example are Hispanics too.

I am White. Therefore, Latino and Hispanic are the same as each other and interchangable. It does not make a difference to me.
