Mark Spitz is very slightly better by a VERY thin margin since he got more golds than Phelps, but Phelps has matured since the 2004 Olympics, so I can't wait to see him explode in 2008. Being able to beat Spitz's number of medals in his second Olympics and placing fifth in 2000 at the age of 15 is phenomenal by all means. Did I also mention that he broke the world record 5 months after the 2000 Olympics? Mark Spitz, again, is still better since he won 7 golds DURING the Olympics, not by his feats outside of the Olympics.

I would take Mark Spitz by just a fraction over Phelps. Close call though!

Technically mark spitz is better because of his medals. i still have no clue how he did it with a mustach and no goggles. Michael is totally awesome though! ( And even though the thorpedo is awesome he dosnt have enough medals to pass those two!)

He's awesome but I'll take Mark Spitz (and his hairy head) any day.
