Friction:

- Chafes the inside of your thighs against the seat
- Causes drag on the bearings and chain, making pedaling less efficient

- Gives your tires traction on the ground
- Lets your brakes work

It's harmful because it slows you down, and the seat gives you crotch rot. It's helpful because it can stop you (brakes) and give you a better workout by making you push harder.
