The cost of living in a certain city has been increasing so much that an item that costs $1 today would cost (1.08)^t dollars in t years. Using the relationship, how much did todays one dollar item cost 9 years ago?

Since you are going to be dividing, you put 1 over the 1.08 and put it to the ninth power since that is the amount of dollars you are comparing. Your answer will be.500... so about 50 cents!

1/(1.08)^(9) = 0.500248967 about 50 cents
