Normally betta fish live to be 2-5 years old, but some betta fishes live to be nearly 8 years old. However, when purchasing from a pet store, it is not always possible to know how old the fish is when you take it home. Male bettas living in laboratories with large individual tanks and daily exercise have lived 10 years or longer.

I've seen estimates as little as 2-3 years on some websites, and I'd be willing to bet the true average (not potential) is very low due to tossing them in vases and bowls, but people who keep them in filtered, heated tanks and take good care of them can see them live much longer (see the Aquahobby link below for a firsthand account and photo from the owner of nearly 7 year old betta.) Well, I had heard that they'd been kept alive 10 years in a laboratory somewhere, but I can't find any reference to that now, so I guess that isn't something you have to take at my word. :)

Look into proper care of your betta. I had a couple that lived a little past 5 years. They need more care than the pet stores tell you though. They really would like 2-5 gallons to swim in - clean water - food every day - a heater!

Just need to clarify that a male and female betta will NOT live together in a bowl. Their courtship can be violent and if the female is not ready to breed, the male with harass her (usually to her death) and vice versa she can kill him! I agree that the average life span of a betta is typically 3-6 years. I have been raising bettas now for several years, please do NOT try them living together. Mine are together only for courtship and then separated after.

Why are people answering you for the sake of answering and giving you crap??!
Betta have an average life span of 3 yr. But there's claim that one hobbist did managed to keep 1 for 7 yrs.
Betta are hardy fishes and dun ususally dies becos of water condition but mainly due the feed you give him!
Enjoy.
