I guess I'm not the first person to ask this question - but I want to put it out there anyway. I brought 3 fish home a few days ago. One of them is completely not symmetrical - its fins are tattered and one looks like a pimple (is that a sign of infection?) I think he got caught in the net at the store - and we should have said something, but we didn't. What's the best solution?

That sounds like a really nasty infection going on there. Fin rot and probably something else as well. Return him if you can otherwise you need to treat the tank with antiboitics asap and treat for 7-10 days.

Im not completly sure what it is, by your description it could have been nipped by others or could have fin rot, either way, I would treat with melafix, and bump up the temperature in your tank a bit, but dont go any higher than 82*

tattered fins wil heal -- put some aquarium salt or melafix in the water to help. if they look like they are flaking off still its fin rot and you need antibiotics. fish don't really get pimples -- it might be a cyst associated with fin rot in which case he needs immediate antibiotics.
