In your opinion, what would be the effect -- positive or negative -- on how we go about selecting our presidents? Is it a worthy reform to consider? Why or why not?

We select our presidents by a vote of the people. We are not Canada, and will never be. Canada needs us to protect them from enemy invasion, not the other way round. Canada would be attacked, and their resources taken if we weren't on their border, same as Mexico. That is the only reason they can act so peacefully to the world, and for no other reason.

I dont know about the canadian system but I do think the campaigns run overly long and if they were shorter... well politicians wouldnt need to raise so much money.

In the USA i think by the time a politician runs for office then settles into office, then mid term they get a few things done, then they start campaigning again 3/4 of the way through their term.
Senataors spend about 1/3 of their term settling in or campainging and with the 2 year term for reps its probably more like 2/3 of their term.

I like the idea! The way it is now, by the time elections come round we are sick of seeing & hearing the candidates! Also, we have stopped listening! Sure would save a lot of money, too.

And what would Fox News do then? They would actually have to 'report' news. You can't do that to them!
Anyway, most Americans love shallow and meaningless 'circus and show' too much to change the system.
xenypoo (above) You are arrogant and foolish.

Maybe we could do it like American Idol ... take a big caravan to a bunch of cities, have people give speeches in front of seasoned politicians who critique them ....
