No one has to put up with it. Its your decision to not listen and walk away, or stand there and take it, or get angry and argue.

I have a feeling that if it wasn't race, we would work out some other equally stupid way to subjugate people based on something about themselves that they can't change.

The thing about race is that it is the most obvious thing which tells people apart - aside from what sex you are, and as we know this is also a basis for discrimination. You can look at a person and automatically make judgements based on what they look like.

It's pretty sad that we don't seem to be able to get over this barbaric habit. Maybe it has its roots in some kind of primitive urge - maybe we used skin colour to tell tribes apart, and decide if they were safe or friendly people millions of years ago in Africa, who knows?

Or maybe we are just horrible and need to control someone...

A major part of the problem, historically, is the large body of thought, science and philosophy which was devoted to the concept of "progress".

For a good few centuries, societies which originiated in Europe believed and were taught that the only way for man kind to move ahead was "progress" - this meant learning everything about the world, and how to use it to our advantage. It was basically the process of moving away from the dark ages and into an era or "civilisation". Anyone who didn't believe in "progress" the way that the Europeans did, was considered primitive. This pretty much meant that anyone who wasn't of European descent was inferior in some way - less intelligent, because they hadn't developed certain technologies or attitudes. It was never really condsidered that maybe people in bountiful areas like Africa and the Pacific didn't need to change their lifestyle, because it perfectly provided everything they needed - unlike Europe, where you had to work very hard to change the environment just so it could support you. It was also never considered that maybe there were other ways to be civilised which didn't have to include God, cutlery, libraries and tea. South American, Asian and Native American civilisations were judged to be "heathen", and basically backward or undeveloped because they were different to European civilisation.

What the Europeans thought might not have had much impact except that they were much more powerful than other civilisations - not necessarily better - and basically destroyed many of them with little effort. Thus the British Empire was born, and racism has been entrenched in these countries, in everything people do, ever since.

It's not that only white people are racist, it's that racism can be a learned behaviour. By treating most of the world as if they are inferior, I think that the western world at least was founded on a core of racism which we are only beginning to address.

Since we have only been targeting racism for about 50 years, (less maybe!), and it has been going on for significantly longer than that, I think we have come a long way! But I am not sure if we will ever be rid of it totally...

Before I learned about racism the only problems I had was getting to and from school dodging drunks, drug addicts, and prostitutes.

Race, color, or male or female doesn't bother me. It's what they want or what their selling that bothers me.
