My boyfriend works in a restaurant, and this same family of eight comes in all the time. They are chatty, etc. (Although they do smell :P) But they are picky customers and ask for a lot of extras. When it comes around to tip time, they never leave a tip for any of the servers. What would you do in this case?

lol unfortunately we live in a college town with lack of good restaurants. Also these people pay in cash apparently, so tipping doesn't seem like it would be a problem.

I use a rule of thumb when providing service: if I know you don't tip, I won't provide service. In the U.S., servers get paid from tips, not from our hourly wages. In fact if you don't tip at all, you will actually take money out of my pocket. Why would I want to give you good service if I know you won't tip and you cost me money?
I don't discriminate, but if I serve someone that did not tip me in the past, that person won't get service. Your boyfriend doesn't need to be rude; just simply forget the extras. The other tables I am serving become the priority.
I work at a privately owned restaurant and can refuse service to anyone. This probably isn't the case in your boyfriend's situation, but it is still worth mentioning.
Please people, if you don't have money to tip, then don't go out to eat.

Add 15 or 18 % gratuity to the check, it's legal, most restaurants do that for parties of 6 or more, they can't say anything, first let the restaurant management know about the issue and ask if he can add at least 15% gratuity to the check, specially since your bf isn't the only one who's not getting tipped out from this family,
that's what I do when such things happen...
Good luck to your bf

I see two possibilities.
1. Give them a break. Maybe they can't afford to tip. You say they are kinda smelly, maybe this is there once a month or once a week treat. That might be why they ask for lots of extras too because they don't get the treat of eating out often.
OR
2. Make a mandatory 15% gratuity for parties of 8 or more. Several resteraunts have similiar rules.

No reason to be passive about it. If they came to a restaurant with 8 people they can't be poor, if they are they are idiots cause food at home is much cheaper. I'd hand them a bar of soap with their bill. Exactly have the tip included on the bill so they can't get around it. These people sound like real winners, I always leave like 20%.

First of all, they're a family of eight, so have a little sympathy! But I guess your boyfriend could make sure he's especially attentive to his other customers so that when that family comes their other customers will compensate by leaving good tips!.

This is his job. Whether or not a customer leaves a tip is still up to the customers discretion. In some cultures, tipping is frowned upon, so are they American or foreign? If he starts to give them bad service, it is almost certain that they will complain to management and it might mean his job. So just put up with it, they are only one set of customers.

The smelly ones are the worst !!
If he has a history with this particular family and KNOWS that they are a stiff, tell him to put them on the bottom of the priority list as far as refills, extras and timeliness is concerned.
I will never go the extra mile for people like this, bare minimum is ALL they get.

These people come in, spend their money, and seem to be regular customers. Consider this....their food check is paying part of his wages, and helping to provide his job. Perhaps as his skills increase, he will be able to relocate to a more upscale restaurant, where this is not likely to happen. Best wishes

No tip at all?? What kind of a resaurant is this? I'd just tell the manager I didn't want to wait on them when they come in. Or give them to a new person.

Tell your boyfriend to take after the mob. You don't pay your servers a tip for the service. You pay the servers for protection of your food as it travels from the kitchen to their table. If they aren't tipping, how can he ensure the food is protected from spit, hair, urine, bugs or whatever is on the floor and ensure that all of their picky little demands are met. Tell him to watch the movie "Waiting". I think he needs to teach them a lesson about dining out.
