Some equations are difficult to solve for Y and sometimes it is impossible. I wanted to know if the TI-89 would graph these. And I would also like to know if it will take derivatives of these equations.

i know that you can do 3d graphs on the ti 89...but in your case, x^2 + 2xy + 4y^2 = 0 is the same thing as (x + y)^2 + 3y^2 = 0...the sum of two squares and it's equal to zero? the only real (read: not imaginary) solution is (0, 0)...

With TI-89's you have to solve for your variable before you graph it. The Y would need to be isolated. Try factoring
