Hello again, everyone. I have asked your opinions about different items before. Here is what's up. I am 26, just learning art for the first time. I have painted 4 pieces and am starting to learn to draw and sketch with pencil alone. Please give me your feedback on these two sketches. This are the first pencil sketches I have ever done. I have had no formal training...just trying to form a new hobby, but be decent at it. I don't want to just doodle, know what I mean? Please be honest, but avoid super rude remarks. I appreciate all of you for taking your time to answer. ; )

It's kinda funny that you guys say that the second one is more realistic...it is a sketch of my horse that I own. : ) I know horses don't smile...lol. Point well taken, though. Keep the feedback coming. I have learned a lot from you guys.

Both are pretty good, but I like the second one better, looks more realistic (horses don't smile like the first one). Value (shading) is the most important part of realistic drawings. Don't be afraid to go really dark. I had that problem for a long time.

And doodling is fun! I used to do it all the time when I'd stop paying attention in class, did some of my best work doodling! It's great practice.

I think you're doing great, try drawing a person! Or a self-portrait! I've never done one personally... I'm afraid of examining myself that closely... but I drew a great photo of one of my girlfriends once. She gave it back because she said it kept looking at her.

... plus she cheated on me.

I don't draw my girlfriends anymore.

Pics are a bit fuzzy, but they are not bad. If this was your first attempt, I say you have some decent talent. Your porportions are good.

My daughter is a self-taught artist and has won awards for her drawings and paintings. She bought books on anatomy to get her proportions right and also bought books on drawing hands and feet (very hard things for artists to draw) and filled page after page in sketch books drawing these things until she got it right.

She did take some art classes in college (she is going into video game art and design) and sharpened her skills, so maybe you could take some classes at your local college or art store to give you tips on different techniques.

I feel, from what I saw, that you could become a very decent artist with some formal training. Good luck and enjoy.

It's pretty good. You can add more details to the shirt and make the eyes more smaller. Also, to me, the body and the upper part of the leg (is that the hamstring?) is not that proportional to the head. For the background, you can put her into a park at a picnic with people flying kites, climbing trees, etc. in the back.

they were good but very blurry. you need to use a scanner for posting pictures. if you want to get opinions on your art you should also join deviantart.com. its a place where people post there art and can receive comments and such on work. i am a member and have never once received any rude or unwelcome comments and my art isnt the best.

They are very good. You might like the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"

hard to tell exactly because the pictures are blurry, but they seem to be a good start. You might want to think about using dark vs. light areas to distinguish shape instead of relying on a line

I think they're a lot better than I could do. The second one is best, it's more realistic. I think the first needs more detail... it's still kinda cartoonish. I think if you keep at it you could be really good :)

Looks like you have the shapes down, all you need to do now is work on the shading.
