how much homework should each grade have:

kindergarten
1st to 4th
5th to 8th
9th to 12th

college is all optional so it'll stay out.

i think that they should give less homework since it's taking the life of kids away and they can't enjoy themselves as much.

If I can guess I would say 5 minutes added to each grade. 5 min in K,
10 in 1st grade,
15 in 2nd,
20 in 3rd,
25 in 4th,
30 in 5th,
35 in 6th
I think that would be fair. No homework on weekends, winter and springbreaks. Also homework should be assigned for independent work. I've noticed that many projects that my second grader receives needs my assistance. It's fine for me, but what about parents who have 5 or 6 kids? They have 5 or 6 homeworks each night. Too much homework is not good. In my opinion it just teaches kids to be good at something that's already developed. If you take away their play time, you take away creativity. Perhaps that's why United States has lost so many scientists, innovators and developers. We're all one big assebly line.

1-6: Maybe a worksheet a couple days a week. Every couple of weeks there should be a project or report.
6-9th: In junior high, I would say math would demand daily worksheets (though time should be given in class for them also). Reading literature should also begin about now, with an expectation of about 10-20 pages a night.
9-12: High school also demands daily math assignments, but students should not reasonably have to spend more than an hour or two on homework or studying.

The general rule that I was given in college was approximately 10 minutes per grade per night....

So, according to that a first grader should have approximately 10 minutes of homework per night, a second grader 20 minutes, etc...

However, I can't see giving a senior 120 minutes per night...that just seems like to much to me.

There is actually a lot of research out right now supporting a drastic reduction in homework, or even a complete elimination of homework.

I read somewhere where a teacher gives 10 minutes of home work per grade level. Grade 1 - 10 min...Grade 5- 50 min.

Homework is needed. It teaches discipline and makes you ready for the next grade or college.

There is a lot of conflicting research about the value of homework. I beleive students in the US have less homework than most of the other countries in the world.
