Axolotls will eat small fish. And anything else that fits in their mouths.

Axolotls are carnivorous by nature - and cannabalistic as juveniles. I've had a few and bred them once. The feeding response (particularly in young animals) is triggered by movement. It doesn't matter if the movement is a bloodworm, a fish, or their borther's/sister's leg. They become less cannabalistic as they mature, but still are interested in movement. You can get them to the point where you can hand-feed, but expect a nip now and then - they will latch on to fingers, but don't really hurt - they have teeth, but can't break the skin.

The way they feed is to open the mouth very quickly so that anything immediately in front of them is "suctioned" inside. Even if your fish avoid the axolotl during the day, they might be eaten as they rest at night.

Other things you can feed an axolotl are turtle sticks and pellets, bloodworms, earthworms, and fish pellets.

Axolotls need cool water (should be less than 70, preferably 60-65) with low aeration. If they have too much air, they can lose their gills. So if you want to keep them in a natural (neotenic)state, an adjustable air pump with an undergravel filter is best.
