The standard order of operations is first evaluation of parenthetical statements, followed by exponentiation, then multiplication and division from left to right, and finally addition and subtraction from left to right. This is frequently abbreviated PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) and often recalled via a phrase such as "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally".

PEMDAS
1. first you multiply, divide, add or subtract anything within parentheses
2. next you calculate any exponents, ex: 4 squared
3. next you multiply or divide depending on what is first to the left, ex: 3 x 4 / 2, you would multiply 3 times 4 first
4. lastly you add or subtract from left to right
ex: 3 + 4 - 2, you would add 4 and 3 first
