Please do not listen to Gordon B, he will cause many problems should any one take his advice to heart. Spark plug gap will NOT change ignitioin timing, and it is typically .035 for older vehicles, .045, or .60 for newer cars. Keep in mind this is GENERALLY speaking, and in no way all inclusive for ANY make, model, or year vehicle. I do not mean to belittle anyone, but incorrect information can cause quite serious damage, especially to todays vehicles where computers attempt to compensate for operating defeciencys.

Altering the spark plug cap will change the ignition timing of a car, that's why almost all car manufacturers print the optimum settings in their shop manuals.

You can use a temporary fix so the the car will run until you get the right setting. The gap is typically around 18 thousandths of an inch, a hacksaw blade can be used as an emergency feeler guage.

Alot of vehicles use different gap sizes, look on the sticker under your hood for your correct gap size for your car.

There is no standard gap, under the hood is usually a plaque with specs for that vehicle, or check repair manual.
