After 2 hours there is only one answer that doesn't have something negative to say about the reality and viability of the American Dream; a desire for their future. Yet most people in this country, I think, live it; what I'm trying to ascertain is if it is imposed by culture, the media, the schools. Is every one of these citizens in some way a " TV puppet" when it comes to having "a desire for their future". Or do they just live apathetically "one day at a time"waiting for whatever interesting may come along? That latter seems to be the state of "a desire for the future" of children before they attend school. They just trustingly exist but seem very happy at it.

The american dream has been/can be many things. To some it meant the freedom to worship as they pleased without fear of reprisal. To others it was the oppurtunity to own their own land, till their own farm, and not have to give most of the fruits of their labor to the "ruling body". To others it has been as simple as having enough food to feed your family ( Irish potato famine). Imagine that. Some people worry about having a beemer in the garage, yet 3 or more generations removed, their ancestors just wished for enough food so their children wouldn't go hungry. Or a roof of their own. Or to escape persecution. How callous & consumeristic do we have to get before we realize how good we have it. For all this country's faults, I still would choose to live here. Too many people are being whiny little brats about what they don't have, without realizing what they do have. As far as the media is concerned, you can pick and choose what you want of it. Which comes back to your own pre concieved notions. Y'all have fun with that. LoL

The American dream is what everyone should have.

It shouldn't be a dream, but greedy people have turned it into a dream that pretty much cannot become reality now.

The dream is to have a house, that you own, and a new car, and some money in the bank, and be able to take a vacation once per year and have a couple of kids with enough money to pay for them.

But now only illegal mexicans get the dream, they come here illegally, they get the low income home deals, they work and claim welfare, they have 10 kids and get a tax refund that they don't deserve.

Forget the media, they will only say what makes them money.

The American dream is based on consumerism and economic materialism: Its emphasis on material possessions as a way of finding happiness is superficial and meaningless. It is futility. The American Dream promots an ethic of selfishness and promots social inequality. Who would seek to find a road that in the end leads to the loss of ones soul? It may be best to wake up from that dream, and face reality.

A wife, kids, a house w/ a white picket fence. Oh and dont forget the apple pie for dessert. A few bucks in the bank wouldnt hurt either. Okay maybe a Hummer in the driveway. I think everyones idea of that varies.

If you keep electing Democrats, and sadly certain Republicans, there won't be such a thing as an "American dream".

All people care about is who is Britney Spears going to get knocked up by next, while politicians sell your country bit by bit right under your noses.

Lemmings. Wake up. Illegals trample and defecate on your country, and you pay for everything they get.

The American dream is to be able to live your life the way YOU want to live it. Unfortunatly that dream has been slowly crumbling for years. Media, Government, and yes even fellow Americans are destroying it.

of course. "the american dream" is all about having more money and a bigger house, and a whiter picket fence than your neighbor. people look at celebrities and think that more money equals more happiness. this is not the case however, and i think most people actually know this. the "ideal scenario" is different for everybody. people are individuals.

The "American Dream" was founded on the DEATHS of many people and on the Cultural Torture of these people. Think about it.
