It's for referees not to understand and supporters to argue about. There are rules but Sir Ian McKellan as the wizard has them locked away.

As the forward on your team's offense, there must be one defender even or between you and the opposing goal keeper when the ball is kicked to you or in the direction of the goal in a position for you to make a run on it. Otherwise you could have a couple of your guys hanging out with the goal keeper waiting for your defenders to kick the ball to that end of the field. The defenders will often play what is called an offside trap, they form a line and move the other teams offensive players toward mid field and right before the other team kicks the ball, they will step toward mid field making the offensive player offside.
You cannot be offside on your own half of the field.

I hope I expained that well enough, I can't draw a picture here.

which type of football. In general football (Soccer in the US) offside is when the offensive player is between the last defender and the goal keeper on the other team. He is only called offside if the ball is passed to him while he is in this position. This is judged by the time the ball is kicked, not when it reaches the offensive player.

In American Football (NFL) offside is when a a player crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is hiked. Of course, both of these situation can be more complex, but this is the basic definition.

When an attacking player is closer to the opponents goal before or when the ball is played goal-ward by one of his team-mates, and he attempts to play the ball, he is deemed to be off-side, he can however be in an off-side position and not whistled or flagged if the officials don't think he was interfering with the play.
An attacking player cannot be ruled offside from a goal kick or a pass from an opponent or if he is in his own half.

When the ball is passed toward a player further ahead of all defenders, that player is offsides. There must be at least two players between the offensive player and the goal. One of them is usually the goalie, the other usually a defender. A player can be called for offsides in this position if the ball is shot as well.

Offside is when an attacking player receives a ball inside the defenders territory whilst standing goal side of the second to last player.(There must be two players of the defending side between him and the goal.)

You are deemed offside should you receive the ball when IT IS KICKED TO YOU in such a position.

The ref need not stop play if you are standing in an offside position but are deemed not to be in active play.
ACTIVE PLAY meaning receiving the ball or influencing the outcome of a move by being in such a position. (This is where most have problems, but if common sense is used then all would be well.)

A player need not receive the ball to be in active play. My advice would be to have a parameter and any within in it should be seen as being in active play.
May be the following link will make it clearer for you.

the off side rule...or should i say rules......
theres encrochment
and then theres false start

encrochment can only be on the defense
its when they cross the line and touch a player before the ball snaps (wich means they can cross the line and come back if an offensive player isn't touched before the ball is snapped) or if they cross the line and wich makes an offensive player move then its also called encrochment on the defence

fals start is on the offense
this ones simple, a player moves or jumps before the ball is snapped (with an exeption of the QB and RBs and WRs because they can go in motion)

hope that helps

Moon man why would the question be about American Football on this site.
As others have already said the offside rule has now been devised to fool everybody,nobody really knows it's like when can you take a free kick.

THE OFFSIDE RULE when a team is in possesion of the ball and they are attacking they can pass the ball shoot do there skill whatever they want but if one of your players who does not have the ball runs past the last defenderand has just the goalie in front of him and you pass the ball to him then he is offside, now there can also be a situation when the person who has the ball has managed to get pass all of the defenders of the other team and hids team mate has run alongside him and he has just the keeper to beat if he passes the ball to his teammate he must pass the ball in a backward angle if he passes it forwards to his mate then he plays him into an offside position. does this help

Mahesh 14's answer is the nearest to the correct answer except the latest change in the offside rules. Opponent player's position has to be seen at the time kicking or generating the pass to receive. If at the time of taking kick by his co-player, he is behind the opponent player but after Dispatch of the ball ( when the ball is in air) he came in front of all the opponent player and scores, it is not off-side, the goal is valid.

You should know the what the defenders and the forwards are. When 1 of the forwards have the ball, they can dribble the ball past the defender or shoot past them. If there are 2 or more defenders, then you can only past the ball to the forwards that aren't passed the defenders. I'm sorry if this is a bit confusing, but I hope you understand.

EX: X=forwards O=defenders ---->=pass

X--------> X } onsides
O O}

X------------ } offsides
O ---- O }
---->X }
