Take the 1/5 and 3/8 and find a common denominator. Let's go with 40 - 8 times 5 is forty. Multiply 8 by 1/5 getting 8/40, then multiply 3/8 by 5 getting 15/40. Add the two numbers together, 23/40 - to figure out what Levi received for votes 40/40 - 23/40= 17/40. So, who had the bigger amount of votes Eddie with 8/40, Tamera with 15/40, or Levi with 17/40??? What was the fraction of the votes-hint the answer is above!

All of the votes is 1/1. Subtract 1/5 from 1/1 (or 5/5). You have 4/5 left. Now, subtract 3/8 from 4/5. Make the denominators (the bottom) the same (40). You should get 17/40 - this is the Levi total. Now, you need to determine which is the largest fraction: is it 3/8, 1/5, or 17/40? Hint: using a calculator might help.

Eddie's votes ->1/5
=8/40

Tamera's votes->3/8
=15/40

Levi's votes= 1 - 1/5 - 3/8
=40/40 - 8/40 - 15/40
=17/40
Therefore, Levi won the election with 17/40 of the votes.

I would say that Levi won with 17/40 of the votes. If you found least common denominator of 8 and 5, it would be 40. If Eddie got 1/5 of the votes, it would equal 8/40 and since Tamera got 3/8 of the votes, it would equal 15/40. Levi gets the remaining votes which is 17/40. Forgive me if I'm wrong.

Eddie + Tamera + Levi = Total votes

1/5 + 3/8 + Levi = Total

Find common denominator of 8 and 5 = 40

8/40 + 15/40 + Levi = 40/40 (Total votes)

23/40 + Levi = 40/40

Levi = 40/40 - 23/40

= 17/40

Levi won with 17/40 votes or 42.5 %

I say that Tamera Won the votes...because she got most 3/8 is about most the votes...and for eddie (1/5) thats less than 1/4. So think about the fraction part for Levi. what is 100 or 1 minus 3/8. You may get an answer out of that, that can also be a decimal and then turn it into a fraction by...dividing that decimal from 100

Example:
2.45 divided by 100 = whatever you get...or try whatever you can...try both muliplication or division...and you what seems right, then thats your answer.
Remember 1.5=1/2

Math is easy its all about rules.

1) What you need to do is find a common denominator (easiest way is to multiply , in this case 8 x 5 ) This gives u Eddie 8/40 Tamera 15/40.

2)To find out about Levi subract Eddie and Tameras total from 40 That gives Levi 17/40.

Levi won! 17/40

17/40

1/5=8/50
3/8=15/40

Those two have 23/40. Leaves 17/40 for Levi who won the election.

Out of 5 students only one voted for Eddie as president and out of 8 students only 3 voted for Tamera. Levi on the other had received the rest of the votes. The unknown (x) variable was the total number of students who voted.
