I need this worked so I can have an example to work from. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Perform the indicated operation

(a3 – a2 – 5a) + (6 – a – 3a2)

I'm going to assume that the numbers after the variables are exponents. We'd normally write it like this:

(a^3 - a^2 - 5a) + (6 - a - 3a^2)

You need to collect "similar terms". These are terms that have exactly the same variables with exactly the same powers. For instance, you only have one term with a^3 in it, so that doesn't change. You have two terms with a^2:

-a^2 - 3a^2 = 4a^2

Think of the "a^2" as apples. If you lose one apple and then you lose three more, how many have you lost?

You have two terms with just a in them:

-5a - a = -6a

And you have just one term with no a's, so that stays the same.

The end result is

a^3 - 4a^2 - 6a + 6

Line up the a's depending on whether they are square, cube or whatever:

(a3 - a2 - 5a) + (6 - a - 3a2) = -5a - a - a2 - 3a2 + a3 + 6

= -6a - 4a2 + a3 + 6

Keep in mind that you can only add the a's if they are the same (i.e. you can add a2 + 2a2 = 3a2, but you can't add a2 + a3). Also, watch out for the brackets; if there is a minus in front of the bracket, the signs inside it change (i.e. if you had -(2+3) = ?, it would become -2 - 3 = -5 ), if there is a plus in front of the bracket then just pretend it's not there.

you have to distribute the + sign to the terms in the (..)

a3 - a2 - 5a + 6 - a - 3a2

now comibine like terms

a3 - 4a2 - 6a + 6

thats all you have to do
since it is just addition and subtraction the (..) don't really mean anything

if thats (a cubed - a squared - 5a) + (6 - a - 3a squared), then the answer is 1a cubed - 4a squared - 6a + 6.

all you do is combine like terms.



theres only one a cubed so it remains the same.

so far your answer is positive 1a cubed



there are 2 a's with 2 as an exponent (a squared) so you add negative a squared to negative 3a squared and you get negative 4a squared.

so far your answer is 1a cubed minus 4a squared



so now, you combine the a's with no exponent.
negative 5a plus negative 1a = negative 6a

so the answer so far should be 1a cubed minus 4a squared minus 6a



then positive 6 is left over, so you simply just add it to the end of the answer

making it 1a cubed minus 4a squared minus 6a plus 6.
