The doctors are planning on inducing labor next week. I will be 36 weeks and 4 days. They are going to do a amniocentesis to make sure the lungs are developed before they induce my labor (they are inducing because of problems with one of the baby's kidneys). Does anyone have experience with an amniocentesis, inducing labor, or lung development at 36 1/2 weeks (are lungs usually developed by then)? Thanks for the help.

37 weeks is considered full term, so you are really not far off. I believe at that point the lungs should be completely mature. I would not worry about the amnio at all, they biggest risk with that (about 1 in 1000) is miscarriage but you are already 36 weeks, they are going to deliver anyway and you cannot miscarry that late in a pregnancy because if the babies were born they would live. Good luck =)

Doctors will usually give the mother a dose of steroids to ensure the development of the newborns lungs. I went into pre-term labor at 33 weeks with my first, and they gave me the steroids. I got one dose the night of labor and then a second dose the next day. My daughter was born at 37 weeks and did fine. She had a rough entry into the world, so she was alittle shock up and they had to monitor her for 24 hours. After that, all was well with her breathing. The only thing we had trouble with, was her jaundice. We had to stay a week longer than normal to keep her under the bili light, and then we went home. Happy and healthy. Good luck with the situation and talk to your doc about steroids just in case your babe isn't fully mature. Good luck with the kidneys, I hope all turns out well.

I had an amnio done at 17 weeks...I had no problems with it at all...It didnt hurt at all, and I was fine afterwards....by almost 37 weeks the babys lungs should be completely developed...I am sure they are just taking extra precautions..and as far as inducing labor they will most likely start an IV pitocin drip that will start your contractions....the pitocin does make the contractions stronger but if you have an epidural you will be fine.....Good Luck!

My 3rd son was born at 34 weeks. He was perfectly fine and breathed on his own. We both went home together 2 days after the birth.
