Black Like Me is all about the civil rights movement- if it had never happened, the book would never have been written. These events where African Americans protested their treatment in this country prompted the author to see what it would be like to be a black man in the segregated south. Everywhere he goes in the book, you can see the African Americans discussing the terrible discrimination, and how they want to fight for their rights, either through peaceful protests or violence. The contrast between his privileged white life and difficult life as a black man prompts him to provide a lot of effort to make sure others don't have to suffer as he did. In Black Like Me, you can see that the author admires those who participate in the civil rights movement, whether they are blacks fighting for their own rights, or other white journalists like him who are spreading the word to give black people the rights they deserve.
