no natural diamonds are harder. Synthetic are almost as hard but not quite as hard though.
It is a dense substance, with a specific gravity between 5.6 - 6.0. Cubic zirconia is relatively hard, at about 8.5 on the Mohs scale - nowhere near diamond, but much harder than most natural gems. Its refractive index is high at 2.15 - 2.18 (B-G interval) and its luster is subadamantine. Its dispersion is very high at 0.058 - 0.066, exceeding that of diamond (0.044). Cubic zirconia has no cleavage and exhibits a conchoidal fracture. It is considered brittle.

OK people let me say this......I am a jeweller and I usually buy 200 diamonds a month and sometimes I take the risk to buy synthetic diamonds, but let me say this for sure, some times synthetic diamonds can be sold as real diamonds because they're so identicals that even an expert can get confused and yet real diamonds are harder than synthetic diamonds. So let me tell this becareful if you are buying the real diamond.

There is quite a lot of confusion regarding the use of the word "synthetic" when it is used in regard to gemstones. Its TRUE meaning is a crystal that is identical to the natural stone but produced by some industrial process. Crystals that are produced which only look like the natural product but are not chemically and physically identical (e.g. C.Z. to use as diamond) are termed "simulants" within the gem trade and should not be confused with true synthetics.
To answer your question true synthetic and natural diamonds have equal hardness.
