Does anyone know if I can buy them at a discount (or get them free)?

Normally, the covers are ripped off the magazine, and are returned to the distributor for a credit to the vendor returning them.
The rest of the magazine is then destroyed

All the old magazines get sent to my dentist's office.

I believe those merchants send back the unsold magazines
to their distributor or publisher so they can get credit for the unsold
copies..
