The Big Bang Theory, highly simplified: There was once a really, really, really, really (I mean REALLY) small speck that contained within it all the matter/energy/potential in the universe. Everything that exists now was inside the speck, there was nothing, no empty space, nothing, outside of the speck. We don't know how long the speck existed or where it came from but something happened to cause it to expand (I can't recall if we know what it was that caused the start of the expansion). Everything being condensed into a speck made it very, very, very hot inside the speck, so hot that matter couldn't exist. Once the speck started to expand it did so rapidly ("big bang") and it also started to cool off so that things like quarks, electrons, protons, etc could begin to form followed by more complicated things like elements (hydrogen, helium, etc). Then the particles of matter such as hydrogen atoms started to get attracted to each other through gravity until giant masses came together in the forms of stars and planets. And here we are.

I have heard a theory, but I can't remember where, that the universe goes through a cycle of expansion and contraction. Right now we are expanding but eventually we will reach a point where we will stop expanding and start contracting. We will contract to the point where we are a speck again, then we'll expand again, then we'll be a speck again... and so it goes forever and ever.
