Acting is an art form in which you immerse yourself in another person's identity, usually the identity of a fictional character. For the duration of your play you pretend to be somebody else so others can watch you.

That's the heart of it. There are different levels--hobbyists in community theatre, regional actors doing semi-pro and dinner theatre, big names who make Broadway or Hollywood--and each carries its own benefits and responsibilities, but in the end they all have that one core in common.

If you want to be an actress, I mean a serious working actress, you need to think of it as a job, not as a hobby. You need to knuckle down, audition for everything you can, get your face seen by as many people as possible. Being an actress isn't about playing around, and it isn't about partying with Britney and Paris, it's very hard work. But it's worth it, because there's nothing else like it in the end.

Well, the above answers don't seem to me to answer your question very well. Being an actress requires getting your face out there, so get some headshots made by a good photographer who has had experience in this area. Use those pics to get your comp cards (a large card with several pics of you in different personalities and your stats, basically an actor's business card) too. Start looking for workshops and classes, and take as many as you can. Try Craigslist or your local theatre or high school theatre arts instructor. Once you have some training, start looking for jobs through such sites as Explore Talent, Too Spoiled, Star Search Casting and Craigslist. Star Search Casting is a great place to find the names and addresses for agencies in your area to send your headshot and resume to. An agent makes finding jobs MUCH easier, but it is always good to promote yourself, too, so don't stop looking on those sites I mentioned earlier. Also, never apply for a job that sounds fishy, and never go to a job alone. ALWAYS take someone with you. If you aren't allowed to have anyone go onto the set with you, then ask if there is a waiting area for that person to sit in and have them keep an eye and ear out for you. SAFETY FIRST!!!!! There are so many ways for girls to get sucked into bad situations in this biz. I hope I've helped and if you have any other questions, just email me and ask! I love helping in any way possible!
