For my family and I, personally, it is the presentation of the event. We love movies...I grew up watching the classics and the most frequent event of dating and date night with my wife has always been going to see a movie. We all watch to see the stars as they are outside of their roles...some people watch for the fashions...some people actually have competitions along with the choices. The prestige of the award itself might have to do with the history of the event. It is the oldest award event, it can make an actor, director or one of the many other categories the awards are granted for into an instant success. But the Academy really puts their effort into the entire gala due to the importance of the TV ratings - they don't want a flop. To have a host like Billy Crystal or Ellen DeGeneres, who can improvise and still keep it fresh and entertaining, makes it the event that it is too. People want to be entertained. And everyone wants to see who the top actors, director and movie are...because it will continue to hopefully inspire the industry to keep producing quality films for our entertainment. I value the craft of making movies that inspire or move us as people. The Oscars still define what is special and top-notched in the movie industry...and the reason people still enjoy viewing them.

I think you've chosen wisely the past few years with Jon Stewart and now Ellen DeGeneris. I have good feelings about her coming in because she can be charming and professional, and still be funny at the same time. I hope she can inject some life into this year's awards, and fight against the urge to do everything just the same as it has always been done. Mexico has some really good films competing this year and someone said that an Oscar for Clint Eastwood was past due so he would get it for Letters from Iwo Jima. Movies are supposed to appeal to the general public everywhere, not just American public, and the Oscars are handed out with a very biased point of view. Americans go first even though movie lovers and movie experts do not consider the movie merited such an award because there was somethin better, it is all so akin to politics that I stopped watching the Oscars because I believe America refuses to acknowledge they need to revamp their industry. Good movies fare better somewhere else and while I'm not implying American films and directors are not good enough, they are not tops all the time and an Oscar is awarded for the quality of the work, not because it is past due.

What Hollywood does not realize is that their glitz business is going stale due to lack of creativity and that independent films have come of age. Also, don´t make it sooooo long, it tends to bore those of us who are not especially interested in the never ending technical achievements that are necessary when making a movie.

Did you know that as the years have progressed the Oscars show has gotten less and less rewarding. It used to be fun but now it is just all about would be models wearing Vagotci gowns who really don't look as good as a real model wearing the same gown. More glamour and fashion, more reading from prepared lists, talking too long and thanking God for everything. Most of us could be actors and actresses with the modern day equipment used to make movies these days so why go gaga about someone doing it and getting paid millions for it. They are only legends in their own minds and in the film that was shot piece by piece and stuck together in some editing room to make the final cut. Movies have evolved to the point where now the future stars will be human like avatars that can look almost exactly like the real thing and get paid very little to do it. Movies my friends are on there way out the door.

Legitimacy. You're from Hollywood, you should know this already. It's the least entertaining awards show on TV (and that's taking the dog shows on Animal Planet into account) but because some famous people care about the Oscars, then other famous people care about the Oscars. And then the losers who care about famous people care about seeing them at the Oscars. It's a self-fueling fire. You could call a trash can Studio 54 and if you got enough famous people to go there accidentally it'd be the happening spot to be in no time.

So the real question you should ask is, how can the Oscars continue to be something people in the movie business care about any more than "Missy's Kitty Kat Site Best Director Award"? Other than schmoozing with whoever's on top at the moment, I have no idea.

I can only guess, but wasn't the Oscar the first award given to actors? Historically, I think they gave it out to someone during their lunch hour on the soundstage of one of the major movie studios. Probably done to promote the movie and the studio. This is where all other award shows evolved from since Oscar became such a coveted statue. Over the years, as more groups (unions) came into being, they each decided to promote themselves. So, some sort of award/statue should be given to whatever artists belonged to the group/union. All members belonging to these groups got to vote. Somewhere down the line, voting became something offered to "the people", or the "press", thus becoming another named award and so on and so on. So I guess because Oscar was the first of its kind, it is the STAND OUT show. As a little critical note....I can remember when Bob Hope was the host, and was great. Then came Johnny Carson, who is my all time favorite. We'll never see the likes of those two outstanding talents again. This year, the show was way too long and overblown. I am glad I am able to tape it so I can skip through so much of the (well you know ).

The Academy Awards have been around almost since the beginning of film and are considered to be the most influential. I really don't think who hosts has as much to do with the fact that I watch. I like to see the people I have watched for years earn something for their efforts.
I also find the Oscars interesting because many times people who I have felt have not given the 'best' performance of the year wins over a more deserving nominee or a person who should have won the year (or many years) before gets a statue in apology, thus knocking out a more deservig nominee. The politics of it all is amusing (i.e. no one EVER gets best actor for a comedy picture).
Then we have the speeches. Who is going to babble incoherantly? Who will be witty and smart? Who will act like they are just getting what they deserve? Who will be genuinely grateful and humble?
I really don't watch for the fashion. I could care less who is wearing a dress designed for free by some famous designer who does not need the exposure. Or how they borrowed 1 mil in diamonds just for the night and is followed by security to keep them from losing the jewels or having them stolen.
I wish that the ceremony were less stuffy at times, but that's why we have the Golden Globes.
All in all, I'd say the tradition of the show is what makes it the stand out.

Sometimes we get nothing but hateful opinions and mudslinging, and that's okay too, for a few minutes at a time. Overall, it's the actors and actresses that we want to see, and if they have things to say, we'll listen for a while, because we'd rather get it from them than from the gossip rags. During the Oscars people are all pumped up and there is way more people. Also its one night where all these huge stars are in one place having the time of their lives while we sit at home watching. I mean the Emmies they have music and a lot of young kids love music, but they also love the movies they have seen. Since my favorite movie is Independence Day with my favorite actor(Will Smith) is in it I would love to see that win an award. It's like seeing your child grow up and then get this huge job that pays big bucks that makes you feel great. Same thing with the Oscars. Some of the awards may be very dull but all the other movies that are great just overwelm the bad ones. I hope I helped!!!
