I'm from Minnesota but I've always regarded the flag as a symbol of rebellion (in the sense of the 'great American spirit of rebellion') and, yes, for godsakes I know the history. I know there are many people who like to see the flag disappear, but I guess my question is this; does the political motives of the Confederate Army really outweight the symbol and spirit of rebellion and independence?...

I am a Northerner. The confederate flag is part of the history of the South. And I agree with them, that if you don't like it, get out. It has been turned into a symbol of racism by those who do not like it. If you do not like it, then have Congress pass a law, like Germany did after WWII, that bans the display of the flag (in Germany's case, the Nazi flag) If you believe it should be banned, I will not stop you. That is your right as an American Citizen.

I guess people have different views of what they believe the confederate flag to symbolize. But no matter what you feel about it, the flag at one time represented different things, not just some idea of being a rebel. It included men who felt like they had a right to keep slaves. I know how it can be given a positive or negative spin, either way. Being the type of person who would like to see less stress and pain in the world, I don't see a need for it. If I'm going to be a rebel, I won't feel the need to show it off. I'll just be a rebel, and I won't need to be in a group of rebels to do so.

It is a symbol of Southern pride.

Too many of you idiots confuse it for racism, just because slavery was in the south. Slavery had nothing to do with it. Need I remind you that there were black slave owners in America? I want white southerners to stand up to the NAACP and other circles of the black mafia and say NO to a confederate flag ban! It is part of American history, and it should stay.

Just because the Nation of Islam flies the African flag, does it represent black racism? It's a flag of a country, nothing more. Skinheads don't represent the Confederate flag. I find other flags offensive: the Mexican flag, the French flag, and any other country's flag that flies over AMERICA.

The Stars and Bars is here to stay, just like Old Glory. Anyone who doesn't like it should leave America and go to the third world cesspool of their choice.

Well I am from Louisiana. So of course I am crazy about rebel flags. But it stands for the history of all southern states that fought in the war. Can you really blame someone for being proud of the south? I mean come on that wouldn't be right. I don't see that the flag represents, racism, hatred, and believe it or not, but not everyone from the south is racist, but down here there are some African Americans that do bring shame to that. We aren't all racist. Yeah the KkK was racist and we say that we love the KkK, I do sometimes but I am not racist!!! I have a picture that I won at our parish fair, YA'LL want to know what it says??? "SOUTHERN RAISED, REBEL ROSE" and if has a rose in the middle that is colored like the rebel flag. So my opinion we can't help being proud of the fact that we are from the south, and if you have a problem with that then hey it's your problem, because I promise you that no one down here really cares if you don't like the flag. REDNECK 4 LYFE!!!! REBEL TIL I DIE!!!!!

To answer your question yes it does.

How about this. You try being a slave for a week. Then see how you feel about your symbol of rebellion and independence. The confederate flag does not represent rebellion. Rebellion would have been the states who fought AGAINST slavery.

Any symbol that carriers the meaning of hatred has negatives that FAR outweigh the positives.

I love it, I'm Tennesseean born, Virginia raised, with ancestors who fought for the CSA. For the love of God people, the War of Yankee Arrogance was NOT ALL ABOUT SLAVERY, okay, do some independent research, don't just go by what the schoolbooks feed to you.

I love the Confederate flag; it represents rebellion for me, too. Its symbolism, I think, is whatever you believe it to be.

I think people should wake up and become welcome with the year of 2007 not 1460's(or whatever year) because personally the flag has no meaning but hate and meanness to others who are not Caucasian(white) but then again its America so every one is entitled to their own opinion, beliefs, and views of things so that topic is a lot more based on your own opinion and view of the flag.

I am not American, but I HATE it.
I used to call it the KKK/racist flag, until I actually knew that was called the confederate flag
