I have been taking ducosate (Colace) regularly for over two years. Am I damaging myself by taking this so long? My understanding is that it is just a lubricant.

Colace is a stool softner. It causes the fluids in your body to accumulate in you bowel to soften the stool and allow it to move out of the body easier. Long term use of this is not really recommended, unless a doctor has told you it is OK to use.

Laxatives, on the other hand, can be habit forming and can cause your bowel to become lazy and not want to work without stimulation.

So, check with your doctor and if he says its okay, then its okay.

I know in general you shouldn't take laxatives for a long time. I looked up docusate in my drug guide and it says that you shouldn't take it for long periods of time. Instead, you should adjust your diet to include more fluids and fiber. This will help keep you regular without having to rely on a stool softener. Also, make sure you avoid taking mineral oil with this drug because it increases your absorption of it.

I am not 100% percent sure, but I know that using laxatives all the time isnt good for your system. Ask a doctor or pharmacist for a thorough answer.

The ingredient that makes that Tylenol a "PM" is nothing more than a mild decongestant. Tylenol itself is not addicting. Also, Tylenol PM will not help you to sleep for any length of time--in days. It just won't work forever. Don't take any type of Tylenol for any length of time because it is dangerous for your liver.

That's probably something you should ask your Dr.
