If you do not sign a contract with the team that drafted you, you are not allowed to sign with or play for another NHL team for two years (the time period that your team owns your rights). "NCAA players are an exception: NHL teams retain the rights to a college player until 30 days after the player has left college."

The team that owns your rights can trade those rights to another team, but that is the only way you can switch teams.

If after two years you still haven't signed, you can return to the draft if you are under 20. If you are not then you become an unrestricted free agent and are free to sign with any team.

nope all you can do is not sign with the team that drafts you for two years then you go back in the draft. You hope the same team does not pick you up again. Hopefully by holding out the team that drafts you will trade you to another team

You don't have to sign with them.....but the team that drafted you owns the rights to sign you so they would have to make a trade. That's exactly what happened with Eric Lindros. Eventually he was traded to the flyers, and the players Colorado (then Quebec) got in return made them (Colorado) competitive overnight and eventually led to a Stanley Cup for them.

Yes, see Eric Lindros...he was drafted #1 overall, and Eric said "I don't want to go to Quebec", and Quebec ended up trading his rights to Philadelphia...the player has to be a very good player for teams to even consider it these days though...

if you turn down being drafted your bloody stupid. basically who cares who you play for as long as you play. eventually when your good enough you will get to go to the team you really like

It's tricky, but yes. Google Eric Lindros for that story.

i could take a Goalie first around, if no longer basically take an extremely solid skater with an common of 87+ If i replaced into you i could take a goalie, often you could have a solid skater interior the 2d around. yet whilst there are not any solid goalies, take Malkin.
