In theory a girl can begin periods at any age. Some children have a condition which causes puberty to begin as young as 3 or 4. On average girls first menstruate at around 11-13 years old, but it is normal to begin at age 8 or 9 or as late as 18. It is unusual to start as early as 8 but it does happen. Children with early puberty can be given medication to hold it off until the appropriate age. If a girl hasn't started her periods by age 16 it is a good idea to go to the doctor just to be checked out. The age of starting periods often does run in families, so girls can sometimes guess when they will start by asking their mum or sisters when they started. I started just after turning 12 and my mum started at age 11 not long before her 12th birthday. One of my sisters started around the same time I think, and the other was about 13 but she was very skinny. Being underweight can make periods start later as your body usually needs a certain amount of body fat before menstruation begins.

The youngest is 8 usually. But that is very far and few between. I started when I was 10 and that was considerably young compared to the rest of the girls at my school. It all depends - ask your mom when she started and it is likely that you may start around the same age (although it's not certain)

Menstruation in a girl has several prerequisites. One theory is that if a young girl lives in a stressful environment, she more than likely will begin her cycle at a younger age than most, due to the fact that nature adjust to those stress factors. The theory is that reproduction is the goal and that stress indicates the probability of a shorter life span, so reproductive process kicks in to ensure the prospect of another generation. The other prerequisite is genetics/ heredity. I had my first period three months before my tenth birthday.
