Yes, Microsoft Windows is very prone to all sorts of nasties as it is so badly written and has many design flaws. Unlike Mac OS X and Linux, Microsoft Windows gets infested with viruses, spyware, adware, trojans and other things you really don't want!

Before connecting a Microsoft Windows system to the internet, you must first take as many precautions as you can.

You can use SUPERAntiSpyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/

to help protect against spyware.

Use AVG FREE to protect against viruses.

But remember that even though you've got these programs installed, Microsoft Windows is still vulnerable!

Other tips:
* Make sure you always run up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.
* Always install all Microsoft security updates as soon as they come out.
* Ensure you have a properly configured firewall.
* Never use Internet Explorer (use Firefox instead) or MSN Messenger (Use GAIM or Trillian).
* Never download anything you don't understand.
* Never click on any ad banners.
* Never use any "P2P" file sharing programs.
* Consider the upgrade to Linux or Mac OS X to be free of adware / spyware / trojans

There are tons of free Anti-virus programs out there. You could use AVG Anti-virus and Zonealarm Anti-Virus (both free) to stop virus from going into your computer. There is also Spyware which could mess up your computer. Use Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal or Windows Defender to get rid of spyware. And you will want a firewall to stop hackers. Use Comodo Firewall Pro for that. And these are all free!!
