i would like to switch to the eco-friendly bulbs, but can anyone tell me why they blow so fast. replacing them as fast as they burn out would not save me money.

I've got fluorescent bulbs all over my place because they DON'T blow out except once in a blue moon. I'm short, and changing light bulbs in ceiling fixtures is a major endeavor for me; good-quality fluorescents bulbs last just about forever! If you're having problems with yours blowing out, I'd say that either 1) you're getting really poor-quality ones or 2) your light socket is getting too much power for the rating of the fluorescent lamp - in which case you need to have somebody check your fixtures before you have REAL problems like a fire.

You could also replace some or your ceiling light fixtures with a 55W circular bulb in a flush mount fixture. Looks cool and is bright as heck. Uses very little energy and should last several years.

Yeah, I thought they are supposed to last longer. Mine blew out too. You do realize that you asked this in the Gardening section.... wrong kind of bulb, my friend. You should relist your question and be careful next time of the category.
