Mult 2nd by -3

2p - 3q = 18
-15p + 3q = -33 add

-13p = - 15

p = 15/13 Subst

5p - q = 11

5(15/13) - q = 11

75/13 - p = 143/13

-p = 68/13

p = -68/13

this a typical problem of 2 unknown elements and 2 equations. This makes it easy to solve. here is how:

5p-q=11 => 5p-11=q
now in the other equation you substitute q with 5p-11
2p-3(5p-11)=18 => 2p-15p+33=18 => -13p=-15 => p= 15/13
replace now p with its value to find q
30/13-3q=18 => q=(18-30/13):( -3) => q=204/13 :(-3)==>
q= -204/39

Solve the second equation for q, which is easiest because it already has a unity coefficient, to get: q = 5p -11. Substitute this into the first equation (thus eliminating q) to get: 2p -3(5p -11) = 18. Expand the parens to get:
2p -15p +33 = 18. Collect terms: -13p = -15. From here, solve for p, and then use either equation to get the value of q.

in the 2nd equation solve for q (q = 5p - 11)

substitute q into the first equation:

2p - 3(5p-11) = 18
2p -15p + 33 = 18
-13p = -15
p = 15/13

Solve for q using the value of 15/13 for p

2007-02-22 12:30:06 · answer #4 · answered by Mark Collins 1 · 0 0

2p - 3q = 18--------(1)
5p - q = 11----------(2)*3

2p - 3q = 18
15p - 3q = 33------(3)

then (1)-(3)

-13p = -15
p = 15/13

substitute p = 15/13 into (2)

5(15/13) - q = 11
75/13 - q = 11
q = 143/75
q = 1.9

The answer is not 0,3.
Plug and chug and check -
2(0)-3(3) = 0-9 = -9 does not = 18
5(0)-3 = 0-3 = -3 does not equal 11

2007-02-22 12:40:40 · answer #6 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

2p-3q = 18
5p-q = 11

2p=18/3q
2p=6q
p=3q

substituting
6q-3q=18
3q=18
q=6
p=18
