Not unless the mobo can be set to boot from a usb device and I doubt that your PC has this feature in the bios. I aint even sure the newest mobos can do this yet! I dont know where all these other hamheads get their info but in order to load an operating system, the drive has to be seen by the bios!

Usually you can create a recovery disc that includes a boot sector. This means you can boot the computer and then it installs a generic CD driver.
I'm not sure if this can be done with a jump drive, or if you need a floppy.

Your Best bet is to replace her CD-Rom as the recovery disk is going to be the easiest fix. A CD Burner should cost about $35.00 at your local computer store and they should put it in for under $50.00

Most newer systems (last 18 months or so) support booting from USB devices. The last thumbdrive I bought included an option to make it 'bootable'. Therefore it can be done if you meet those requirements

u can use a jump drive in place of a CD-R and it's probably easier to format and go back

most jump drives wont hold enough info to recover the hard drive.
cd rom drives are cheap, if you are sure it is not working buy a new one

I think you could, if you copied all the files to the drive.
