Hamsters are solitary little guys. Once they become sexually mature, they will fight to the death.
Dwarf hamsters are the only hamsters that I know of that can be kept more than one to a cage, but in general they should be littermates. If you bring in a new dwarf hamster, there is a distinct possibility that the older hamster will kill the new one.

The only time you can keep two hamsters together is when you are breeding and even with that you have to be very careful. Please don't try breeding without a lot of research and talking to other hamster breeders about breeding.

Several years ago, I had 2 female hamsters in one cage...they were always fighting! Not to the death or anthing like that, but they sure fought alot! They were sisters. One of them tore the other ones poor little ear almost off. I felt so bad for her. Someone had given them to me (I only wanted 1 hamster, not 2). I would say you probably just want to have once hamster at a time...even though they look awfully cute snuggled up together and snoozing...

Depending on what type of hamster it is...

For instance, dwarf hamsters like to live with other hamsters. They are very social and do not mind having mates. Of course, with any type of animal, it is important that you get them used to each other if they seem skiddish around the other one.

Now, there are several kinds of hamsters that do not like to share their dominance with others.

My advice:
Visit a PetSmart, PetCo, or any other type of small animal store and ask them. That way, you can hear it from someone who is trained to work there. :]

most hamsters have a tendency not to get along especially is they are of the same sex. But either way in a time of conflict they may fight to they death and in may cases try to eat each other. Its better to put them in separate cages.

the only hamster that likes company is the dwarf hamster. ALL other types will fight, especially the males, sometimes to the death. if you get another hamster, unless their dwarfs, please put them in seprate cages.

Hamsters prefer to live alone.

no, hamsters are solitary, and like to be alone. it will love for you to play with it, but 2 hamsters get along like a pig in a butcher's shop. (not good) they will fight, over dominance issues, and territory.

you need to put them in separate cages other wise they will fight to the death which means they will kill each other since they did not grow up with each other from babies.
