Well first off, write it. Since you're working from your own memories, you're at a great advantage because you won't have to make up characters or circumstances, which is where most writers get into trouble; true stories are always the best.
You might want to start by writing the sort of stuff I do, which is separate stories based on personal experience. Only write what happened to you, or what you thought: don't speculate on what someone else was thinking unless you know. Don't try to write dialogue unless you have to. And don't be any more serious than you have to be.
While you're writing, read. Read good authors: go to the library and see how really great writers wrote their stuff. Pick up some good current magazines while you're there; the New Yorker is a good start. If you read good stuff, you'll unconsciously start to imitate it.
As for being published, good luck: there are lots of aspiring authors out there and not that many readers. You will note that a lot of luck is clearly required, for a lot of the books on the best-seller lists are true horrors.
Be very careful of people who prey on aspiring authors. They will ask to read your manuscript and then--well, they won't steal it--no, they'll tell you it's great, the greatest thing they ever read. They'll arrange to have it published. But you, the author, must submit a 'reading fee,' and then a 'typesetting fee,' and then printing and binding and distribution and shipping fees.
Outfits like this are known as 'vanity presses,' and they've been preying on new authors for hundreds of years. What you wind up with is boxes of expensive books that you've paid for, sitting in your basement. A real publisher is someone you've heard of, and she will not charge you anything. They pay you.
You might, however, want to look for an agent, and this is a matter that you'll have to investigate yourself. Go to the library and ask the librarian for books on getting books published; there are hundreds of them, which might give you some indication of the nature of the business. Try not to let it discourage you, and keep writing.

I always incorporate my own life experiences into the books I write. Adds more realism to the subject genre at hand.
You should do that.
Getting published is becoming harder and harder these days. I would set a goal if I were you--at what point you want to drop out of the hunt. I've had a couple writers tell me that they won't quit until they get there. (And this could take 20 or more years.)
As for getting published *cheaply*...? There is no such thing. You're not going to get out of paying for *something* by getting it for *free*.
But if you don't care about the craftsmanship of your work, or what other people think or say, just take a PDF-compiling program, make a cover of your own, and publish it on the net.
Most writers who are impatient with the process of getting there--getting published--end up taking the cheap way out. As a consequence, these writers don't always get what they wanted in the first place.

The Cheapest way to get your book out there is to do it with an e-book creator then you can set up a website which you can sell the e-book from.
To do it the hard copy way is a lot harder.
Publishers have been inundated by wanna bee authors so now you may want to look at employing an agent.
If you think your book is good enough you could try approaching the publishers direct but you have to have your sell copy in good form.
If you want help with a great e-book creator feel free to e-mail me uskiwi5@yahoo.com
Hope that helps you out

Just sit down and type the first thing that comes to mind. Then expand from there. When you've got something substantial, you can revise, edit and put it in a coherent order.
When you're ready to publish, ask your library for the latest edition of "Writer's Market." It's got a list of publishers and tips on getting published.
