The actual myth is that the human embryo, while still in the mother's womb, goes through all the early stages of evolution. It has gills when it is very very early in development. For there it advances to a lizard like form, with a small tail, and four "legs". The tail disappears, and the forelegs become arms, etc. It goes through a "monkey" like stage before finally turning fully human.

The myth was very common in the late 1800s and early 1900s, before x-ray and other imaging methods allowed doctors to actual witness the development of the fetus. Since then, it has been shown that the embryo does NOT go through different stages like that. It never has gills, a tail, four legs, etc.

That has been proven to be false.

Yes it happens, on occasion, that a person may be born with a vestigal tail. It is rare, but not all that unusual. It takes the form of a short, stubby growth of an inch or so. Doctors will usually surgically remove the tail within hours of the baby's birth and the child can lead a normal, healthy life. It is just a minor birth defect, not an evolutionary defect.

Humans have a tail in the womb but it disappears before birth.

No, it isn't true--but there is a small bone at the vase of the spine called the coccyx, which many believe is a vestigial tail.
