Yes. Classic literature is the foundation of all literature, and knowing your classics will help you understand and interpret modern literature. Also it can be enjoyable to read.
Edit: Classic literature is also the basis of many works of art, and inspires the plots of plays and movies.

Reading has always been a personal joy for me. Significance outside the classroom is a development of taste, like a fine wine, the arts, and personal growth. Knowledge, imagination, history, geography and even matters of the heart are learned.
