I would like to replace the DSL modem provided by my ISP with my own combination DSL Modem / Router / Access Point. Assuming it meets the technical requirements, will I need to obtain assistance from the ISP to make the change or can I just swap the hardware and hope for a connection?

You should ask your ISP what hardware they recommend. Buying something and hoping it works is not the best of ideas unless you have money to throw away.

Not to mention they will not support it. You need to enter the VPI/VCI which you will get from your ISP
