Try this word association: Renaissance --- Queen Elizabeth -- Sir Francis Drake --- Golden Hind

The Spanish certainly thought of Drake as a pirate!

Pirates have been around since humans sailed the sea, they are basically bandits at sea. They might not look like the pirates you see on TV but yes they existed during and before the Renaissance and they still exist now.

I don't think there were as much during the Renaissance as the golden age of Pirates but they're still there.

Yes, there were pirates during the Renaissance. There are pirates now. They weren't (and aren't) necessarily like the pirates that are depicted in movies and such, but there has always been pirates in some form or another. (Basically they're people who sail the seas and attack other ships.)

Sorry to say, but your mom is wrong on this one.

There have always been pirates since the concept of possessions began. There probably weren't a lot of ones with ships and parrots, but I assure you there were thieves in the Renaissance.

There have been pirates for centuries even before the days of the Greek and Roman Empires - once men took to boats and ships it involved trade and things of value - and men found ways to take the bounty from ships.

well I'm not sure there were the typical "pirates" but I'm sure in some parts of the lands there were smugglers who were basically pirates.
