Here's a timeline over Austria's history since 1918 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1033454.stm

General Austrian history: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0107301.html

In my opinion, the two most important elements on the timeline are the Hapsburg empire and the second world war when Austria was annexed into Germany by Adolf Hitler (anschluss), so you might want to focus on those.

You can find more info on the influential Hapsburg monarchy on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habsburg_Monarchy

http://countrystudies.us/austria/41.htm talks about how Austria defeated Germany in the war.

Official name= Republik Österreich (= Republic Austria)
Area= 83,858 square km. (almost 2x the Netherlands)
Number of inhabitants= 8.2 million (July 2002)
Population density= 97 people per square kilometer
Capital Wien= (Vienna)
Monetary unit= Euro (€). € 1 is about $ 1,15 (July 2003);
Road network= Most roads in Austria are very good. A toll ticket is obligatory for the highways. Some roads in the Alps can be quite narrow and sometimes there are no guard rails. For some roads, like the Grossglocknerstraase and Col Timmelsjoch one has to pay toll, also.
Fuel prices Gas= € 0.80 to € 0.98; Diesel: € 0.73; LPG: € 0.60
Cars' license plate= A
Telephone country prefix= 43
Internet country code= .at
Prices in general= The prices of food and other things show clearly that Austria is a prosperous country. For a cup of coffee and a large pint of beer we had to pay at least € 4,50. Because of the many toll-roads and high entree fees we spent in 5 days more money in Austria than we did in two weeks travelling though Hungary and Croatia.
Time difference= GMT+1 the same as in Holland
The best in Austria= The majestic Alps always are a fantastic sight, especially the area of the Grossglocknerstrasse (Hohe Tauern) and the mountain road over Col Timmelsjoch (Western-Tirol). Vienna is also an impressive city, but a but too bombastic for our taste.

Official Language is German. Heavily influenced by German all throughout history. Adolf Hitler was born there and so was Arnold Swarzennegger (sorry about the spelling). Capital is Vienna. It is a landlocked country, but built a powerful Navy at the beginning of the 20th century because back then it was Austria-Hungary, which included sea ports on the Mediterranean Sea. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart hailed from here as perhaps the best composer in history. Is about the size of New England and has a population of roughly 10,000,000. This is just off the top of my head.

Without looking at the search engines...Austria is a country in Europe. It is where the "Sound of Music" was shot (supposedly). It's next to Germany so they share similar customs. Austria is also after Australia when they come out during the Olympic games.
