well when i worked at a furniture shop i was shown a piece of wood called "zircot" it was almost completely black but you could see the grain in it still, and it was very heavy and hard. my personal choice.

depends on what your taste is mahogany, cherry, curly cherry, birdseye maple, rosewood, teak, koa, cocobolo
