I know this sounds crazy and I appreciate the answers from my last question about my sons tongue. He doesn't just seem like he is playing with it. It seems like he has a dry mouth. Even after he has just ate. When he sleeps it is pressed against his lips with his mouth opened slightly. I never seen a baby do it before. I am really worried because he already has a heart murmur and a vessel that did not close that was suppose to when he was born. My daughter never did this. I had gestational diabetes with him as well and he was born four weeks early at 9lbs 7oz. and now weighs 12 pounds and is 23 1/2 inches long. I am sorry if this sounds like I am crazy, but I just never seen it before.

Hi,
Babies will have a tongue thrust untill around 4 months old. Infact, my son who is 6 months old got rid of it right before he started solids. Although his tongue was not consistently placed by his lips, but it was there alot.
I don't think it has anything to due with his heart murmur, and normally if it were neurological you would see of signs like seizure activity. Try not to worry and check with your pediatrician, I bet everything is fine. By the way, I work for pediatricians and have been for 20 years.

Why does it look like my baby's tongue is hanging out and/or push against his lips?

It's just an immature circulatory system. You'll notice too at times that feet and hands may be blue. My son had the blue around the mouth for several weeks, I don't recall ever noticing it after 3 months. Definitely something to mention to the doctor at her next appointment because if it's something that doesn't go away within a few months it could indicate other issues but for now it is normal.

I am just throwing this out there--I know it's early--but my son's tongue is always sticking out right now because he's teething. Is there any chance there is either a tooth bud or some other bump in your son's mouth/gums that he's feeling with his tongue?

This more detailed info is helpful! My older son does that at night too (he's a mouth breather for sure), because his nose is often stuffed up, and he has enlarged adnoids. It wouldn't hurt to check in with your doctor--not to be alarmed, just to put your mind at ease. You could ask if it is a nose/adnoid issue. We all have such diverse advice, I think you would be most assured by a professional. Good luck!

Maybe it is due to the baby's weight...I also have a healthy sized baby and her tongue is always out.

Im sure he's fine, but ask your doctor at the next visit if you are still worried. He may just find his tongue interesting at this moment.

no teeth to hold the tongue in...if your sons pallet isn't shaped quite right his tongue wouldn't stay in. Next time you see the Pediatrician point it out, make sure they consider your concerns.
