Of course! Just a bit of the TV's handiwork:

-The invention of worldwide-spread stereotypes about all groups of people.
-Brittney Spear's bald head being showcased in the news for more than three days straight.
-Anna Nicole Smith's death being broadcast even longer than the death of ex-President Gerald Ford.
-The creation of animosity towards other countries (because of biased news reports).
-Children growing up blind from staring at the screen more than 8 hours per day.
-Children learning about sexual intercourse before they reach the age of 6.
-Jet Blue taking up everyone's time on every news station...when really no one gives a flyin frick.
-People getting fat and lazy sitting on their rear ends all day watching I Love Lucy marathons.
-The American Idol craze.
-Post partum depression.
-Breast cancer.
-AIDS
-World hunger

...just a few things the tv is responsible for.

And Danequa still don't know who her baby daddy is! Thanks a lot, Maury!

On a more serious note, yes the tv has very negatively effected our society. With the exception of the last four, you could consider looking into the other issues I listed.

It's had positive effects, too, but since you asked for the negative ones:

It has a 'dumbing down' effect. People like Paris Hilton make it cool for girls to be stupid.

It promotes commercialism since it's supported by advertising

Currently there's a trend in reality shows that makes it seem like conflict is always the best way to resolve an issue and that it's normal for people to shout at each other all day.

I believe that the constant stream of rich and good-looking people on TV can have negative mental effects on some people, too

A couch potato makes for a bad parent no matter what age the parent is. Reading to your child/children makes for good learning habits for both parents and child/children. Reading to your youngsters is by far the best way to communicate and to let you youngsters know that reading is good for everybody. Television is okay but don't let it take you away from your child/children because that teaches them that watching it is more important than they are and they will in time pass that message on to their own children too. Sounds like you are a very loving parent if you feel guilty when you stop playing with you 8 month old. and for this I think you will be an even better parent. Yes I have felt guilty when I did what you described but I soon put both of my sons first after I realized why I felt guilty. Both of my sons have grown into very wonderful young men for which I am very proud to call my sons. I hope I have made some sense of my answer to your question. Children first, television second, okay. Best of luck to you and your 8 month old too.

It propagates violence and gangs, children are now more obese than they were 30 years ago when I was a kid because they lay around playing video games or watching television instead of going out in the fresh air and sunshine to play. They don't use their imaginations. We used to have fun with a stick and a tennis ball(stick ball), played hide and go seek, kick the can, in the summer our parents could hardly get us to come in at night. We would get jars and catch firefly's. No one reads anymore most of the knowledge comes from the computer or the TV. My niece reads and prefers to read because I read to her and made reading fun. Wars used to be accepted as necessary to protect this country now with the Liberal media running in and out of foxholes and filming only what they want us to see our soldiers are called murderers instead of heroes. The only good things on TV are The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, and The Learning Channel and Animal Planet.Parents don't interact with their kids anymore, they sit them in front of the hi tech babysitter and go about their busy lives. Reality shows are absolutely ridiculous. People especially young girls are killing themselves to be stick thin because the celebs are. It's really a waste of time to watch television today.

Of course television has affected society to large degree. The media industry feeds off of people's need to see negative and destructive things and indulges it further. Look at T.V. today, overly sexual and violent and these are the images we see everyday. It affects us as adults and how we think and what we want so image how those images affect children?
