I would like to convert my main C: drive to NTFS, and I've read up on the do's and how's, but I would just like to make sure that it won't format my whole C: drive first, then convert, then have to re-install XP, as I no longer have to disk, and be screwed. I've read there is a utility with-in XP that will allow me to go from Fat32 to NTFS, and not the other way around. Will I be ok ? I'm just rying to avoid a catastrophe is all. Thank you for any ideas or advice in advance.

Yeah, you will be ok, but with anything major you do with your computer you should make a back up because not everything with computers is guranteed.

You can use the convert command (Convert.exe) to convert an existing FAT volume or FAT32 volume to NTFS. Because this conversion retains all your files (unlike a format operation), use Convert.exe when you want to keep existing files on your volumes intact. In short no loss of data.

you could convert a FAT32 partion to NTFS via typing right here into the living house windows command on the spot. convert DRIVE_LETTER: /fs:ntfs the place DRIVE_LETTER is thepersistent letter of the partition you desire to transform. This operation converts the partition without deleting your information. despite the fact that it is often an extremely, very solid theory to take a backup of something you do no longer desire to loose in the previous appearing any operation that adjustments a record device. besides, exterior no longer difficulty-free drives are dirt inexpensive and if the guidance on your exterior hdd is critical sufficient which you do no longer desire to loose it, you somewhat would desire to have a backup of it. no longer difficulty-free drives fail, record systems get corrupted, viruses take place. quite some issues can pass incorrect and then it sucks to no longer have a backup.

Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

if you need help type "Convert Help". Hope this helps.

The person who responded before me is wrong, you do not need to re-format.
