On the surface of the earth there is much life; 2 miles down there is still a lot of life. Take life and let it die; in the rock; floating down to sea floor; or organics downstream from a river delta.

Gulf of Mexico for Mississippi River; off Brazil for Amazon; Mediterranean for Nile.

Organics float somewhere and are deposited (one type is a black shale) rock is heated and oil migrates out to get caught in traps.

That is why we find oil almost everywhere. Lush vegetation is just a nice starter.

The Earth is seperated into plates like a broken egg shell called continents. These continents move around the Earth by a process called continental drift (part of plate tectonics). Millions of years ago the Arctic continent was situated where Taihiti is located now, i.e. a hot and humid atmosphere, and animals and plants decomposed to form the fossil fuels. The continents then "drifted" over the fluid mantle and are now located over the north pole. Presumably they will continue to shift in the future.

The earth wasn't always as we see it. At one time, all the continents were joined together, and the earth's rotation was on a different axis. At that time, there was lots of sunshine to grow plants to feed animals. The earth is resiliant.
