if your in a terminal window (emulated or not) on a Linux system it will never, ever display any characters that you type on a password screen, it is a security measure that crossed over from unix.

Just type your password then press enter, if it doesn't work you'll get some type of error, which you should either repost here or on a linux forum (better idea).

It wouldn't be a bad idea to sign up for a linux forum either, even the most knowledgeable have questions.

It is allowing you to type in your password but it won't display what you're typing to prevent security issues(people watching over your shoulder)

Just type your password and hit enter. Sometimes you have to do it twice.
