i want to become a shrink and im not sure how many yrs of school u have to take some ppl say 6. and why so many yrs ?

more than eight i think and insteade of the word shrink which can be a derogetory term use the word mental health professional.

Well psychiatrist is the most lofty of "shrinks". The easiest way to go is to be a marriage and family therapist. You just need a master's degree. Psychologists are basically the same but with doctorate degrees and more ability to do testing and assessment. Psychiatrists go to medical school, become doctors, then do 3 more years in psychological studies to be able to give prescriptions. Psychiatrists are the only people who can prescribe meds. Actually you first need to earn a Bachelor's degree that usually takes 4 years. And your GPA must be at least 3.8. Then you must apply to medical school and be accepted. A Psychiatrist (note the correct spelling) is a medical doctor, just like a cardiologist or other medical doctor. Then you need 2 years of pre med, 4 years of med school, followed by 2 to 4 years of post doctoral work in the field of psychiatry. That takes 12 to 14 years.

Same as any MD. Med school, then intern & residency.
If you want less then be a psychologist with a PhD

you have to get your phd. so yes it takes 6-7 years in order to be a practicing psychiatrist. you may also want to learn how to spell psychiatrist.
